What is the Interactive Metronome® Program?

Interactive Metronome® (IM) is a computer-based technology that targets attention, sequencing, coordination, motor planning and timing. These underlying skills in turn affect higher-level skills such as reading, math, self-care and other academic skills. Headphones and hand/foot sensors are connected to the computer as IM uses guide sounds and repetitive limb exercises to help users improve their motor planning and sequencing ability. Research published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy identified five core areas of statistically significant improvements gained following IM training:

  1. Attention/focus

  2. Motor control/coordination

  3. Language processing

  4. Reading comprehension

  5. Ability to regulate aggression

How it works

  • Initial assessment is completed to determine need and baseline for each client

  • Depending on the assessment results, the trainee comes in for 15 sessions, approximately 1 hour per session, 3-5 times per week

  • Sometimes the client will require additional synchronization trainings to prepare them to participate in the 15-session protocol. This is determined after the initial assessment has been completed

  • During the training the therapist keeps a log of each session while the client or parent keeps a journal to track progress

Interactive Metronome® Case Study, Hannah

Amanda went on to share the remarkable progress her daughter made following Interactive Metronome training:

  • Reading fluency and accuracy went from below average to the highest average in her 3rd grade class. Prior to IM Hannah was reading at 78 words per minute (class average was 83). Following her 15 sessions of IM, Hannah's reading increased to 112 words per minute

  • Daily oral language skills are now above her peers

  • Improved attention to detail for class work

  • In math, Hannah went from the 59th percentile to the 88th percentile

  • Hannah put on ice skates and skated for one hour for the first time ever-without falling!

  • Able to hula-hoop for the first time

  • Increased self-esteem

Amanda stated that even though it was challenging, Hannah enjoyed it and has requested additional sessions!

Hannah reports that the changes that she enjoys the most are the improvements she has experienced in dancing, basketball, and math.
